Hive AI alternative · Updated 17 October 2026

A Hive alternative with credits for each kind of content.

Hive’s models check text, images, video, audio and live streams, and its Enterprise plan includes a review dashboard. Hive’s pricing page lists text and visual moderation with a limit of 100 requests a day; its docs call that limit “For developer testing ONLY” and say both need an annual contract. Detectivision is another route: Basic is $49 a month with a free trial. Text, image, video, audio and live stream moderation share one API and one key, and each kind has its own credits. The tables show where each fits.

The facts

What Hive says about price and access

From Hive’s pricing page and documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. In Hive’s docs, V3 is the self-serve API and V2 the Enterprise API. Detectivision is not affiliated with Hive.

Self-serve API and contractsThe docs for visual and text moderation describe the self-serve V3 API as “For developer testing ONLY: 100 requests/day limit”. They say “Visual Moderation requires an annual contract” and “Text Moderation requires an annual contract”, and point smaller customers to Hive’s self-serve vision language model.Visual moderation overview; text moderation overview
Enterprise projects“V2 is reserved for Enterprise projects that need higher throughput, custom support, or invoiced billing.” A Hive sales representative must enable one. To raise the V3 limits, Hive asks you to use its contact form: “We’ll upgrade you to an Enterprise plan and project with custom rate limits and pricing.”FAQ
Vision language model$0.50 per million input tokens and $2.50 per million output tokens. An image takes 256 input tokens per tile, up to 6 tiles. Hive’s pricing page says it “Replaces Hive’s other models for many customers.”Pricing page
Rate limitsSet per project. Past the limit the API answers HTTP 429 with “Project has been rate limited”. Hive’s FAQ gives “generous default rate limits of 25-50 tasks per second, depending on the model”, without naming an API. The self-serve vision language model starts at 5 requests a second.Common errors; FAQ; vision language model docs
Data kept“Our default policy is to retain customer data for 14 days.” Hive can raise or lower that on request, “including not retaining your data at all”, and says longer retention “may incur additional charges”.FAQ
What Hive does with a result“The Hive API simply returns classification metadata based on our model outputs.” Your platform takes the action.FAQ
Review dashboardModeration Dashboard has rules, custom actions that call your server, review feeds, appeals and analytics. The Enterprise plan lists it, and the docs say to contact Hive for access.Pricing page; Moderation Dashboard overview

When Hive fits

Hive’s own pages show what it offers. These are the cases where that list decides it.

  • You need its range of models

    Hive publishes visual moderation with many classes, text moderation, speech moderation, OCR moderation, CSAM detection with Thorn, and detection of AI-generated images, video and audio.

  • You moderate text in many languages

    Hive’s table lists about 30 languages for text moderation, among them Chinese, Dutch, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese and Polish. Not every class is offered in every language.

  • You want the matched words and where they are

    Hive’s pattern matching for profanity and personal information returns the matched text with its start and end index, and you can add filters of your own.

  • You want a review dashboard from the same vendor

    Hive Moderation Dashboard has rules, review feeds, appeals and custom actions that call your server. You request access from Hive.

  • You want to set how long data is kept

    Hive keeps customer data for 14 days by default and can change that on request, down to no retention. Longer retention may cost extra.

  • You buy through a contract and an account manager

    Hive’s Enterprise plan has custom pricing, premium support and multi-region support for high-volume deployments.

  • You sign in through your identity provider

    Hive’s docs describe single sign-on through Okta, Amazon IAM Identity Center and PingOne.

Detectivision

When Detectivision fits

What Detectivision documents, point by point. The tables show Hive’s side of each.

  • Plans start at $49 a month, with a free trial on Basic. Credits come per kind of content, and a check uses the credits of its own kind. Pro and Enterprise are arranged through Contact us.

  • Text, image, video and audio checks go to one endpoint with the kind of content in "type", and live streams run as sessions with the same key. Each kind has its own credit balance, and an invalid request costs nothing.

  • Detectivision’s audio moderation understands English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Turkish, Arabic, Russian and Hindi. In capture mode, the default, each finding comes with its start and end in seconds.

  • A text can be 1 to 10,000 characters long. It costs 1 credit per started 2,500 characters when the result comes by webhook, and twice that when you wait for the answer.

  • Add "async": true to content that can wait. The API answers 202 with the request’s id and sends the result to your webhook, signed, with your metadata. It costs half the credits of an answer given at once.

  • A moderator opens a request in the dashboard’s Logs and takes one of your actions, such as Approve or Ban. Your system gets each one as a moderation.action webhook and carries it out.

  • In capture mode, the default, each finding in a video comes with its second and its box, and censor mode returns a copy with every finding hidden. Tracking follows a finding from frame to frame at no charge. A live session can be set up to 30 frames a second and keeps flagged moments with their picture.

Class by class

Where Hive’s classes go

Hive’s classes as its docs list them on 17 October 2026, next to the Detectivision flags that cover the same ground. GET /api/v1/flags lists the flags of your account. A flag keeps its key.

Hive classDetectivision flagNote
Sexual content: general_nsfw, general_suggestive, sexual activity and nudity heads (images, video)sexual (images); nudity, explicit_nudity, sexual_objects (video and live streams)Hive scores underwear, swimwear and shirtless people in heads of their own. Detectivision’s sexual flag covers nudity and sexual content in the whole image.
Violence and gore: blood, fights, hanging, corpses (images, video)violence (images)Hive also has heads for guns and knives. Detectivision’s violence flag covers violence shown in the picture, such as fights, blood or injuries.
Hate imagery: Nazi, terrorist, KKK and Confederate flag headshate (images)Detectivision’s hate flag covers hate symbols, and hateful text or drawings aimed at a group of people.
Smoking and alcohol headssmoking, alcohol (video); smoking (live streams)In capture mode, the default, each finding comes with its second and its box.
OCR moderation: text inside imageshate, scam (images)Hateful text on a picture raises hate. Contact details written on a picture raise scam.
Sexual (text, levels 0 to 3)sexual (text)Sexual language and sexual harassment.
Hate (text)hate, racism, sexism (text)Three flags, so your rules can treat them apart.
Bullying (text)insult (text)The insult flag covers attacks on one person: name-calling, belittling, cursing at someone.
Self harm and self harm intent (text, beta)self_harm (text)One flag for talk of suicide or self-harm.
Drugs (text, beta)bad_habits (text)bad_habits covers drug use, drinking, smoking or gambling talked up.
Profanity (pattern matching)profanity (text; the Basic plan has this flag)Swear words, aimed at someone or not. An attack on a person has its own flag, insult.
Speech moderation: sexual, hate and bullying classessexual, hate, insult (audio)In capture mode, the default, each finding comes with its start and end in seconds.

The table lists the classes that have a matching flag. Hive’s class pages list more; compare them with the list your account gets from GET /api/v1/flags before you move.

Before and after

A text check, both ways

Hive
curl --request POST \
  --url https://api.thehive.ai/api/v2/task/sync \
  --header 'Authorization: Token <API_KEY>' \
  --form 'text_data="You are such an idiot, just shut up."'
Detectivision
curl https://api.detectivision.ai/api/v1/moderation \
  -H "Api-Key: $DETECTIVISION_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "type": "text_moderation",
    "input": "You are such an idiot, just shut up.",
    "mode": "detect"
  }'

The Hive call is the V2 sync call from Hive’s docs; V2 is Hive’s Enterprise API. Hive takes its key as “Authorization: Token” and the text in text_data. Detectivision takes its key in the Api-Key header and the kind of content in type; without flags, every text flag of your account is checked.

Before and after

An image check, both ways

Hive
curl --request POST \
  --url https://api.thehive.ai/api/v2/task/sync \
  --header 'accept: application/json' \
  --header 'authorization: token <API_KEY>' \
  --form 'url=https://example.com/photo.jpg'
Detectivision
curl https://api.detectivision.ai/api/v1/moderation \
  -H "Api-Key: $DETECTIVISION_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "type": "image_moderation",
    "input": "https://example.com/photo.jpg",
    "mode": "detect"
  }'

Both take the image’s address; Hive also takes a file upload. Hive answers with a confidence for each class, Detectivision with the flags raised.

WhatHiveDetectivision
VerdictClass scores. Hive’s FAQ has you design your own moderation logic from them, with a threshold for each class.flagged, true when any flag you asked for was raised.
Visual scoresA confidence for every class; the classes of a head add up to 1.flags: only the flags raised, each with a confidence from 0 to 1, from 0.5 up by default.
Text scoresA level from 0 (benign) to 3 (most severe) for every class, and -1 when the language is not supported for that class.flags: only the flags raised, each with a confidence from 0 to 1.
WhereVideo: the time of each frame. Text: the start and end index of each pattern match.In capture and censor mode: for video and live streams the second, the frame and the box of each finding, for audio the start and end in seconds. Text and images get one result for the whole input.
LanguageText: the answer names the classified language and the classes that were moderated for it.Nothing to set: the text is read as written.
CoverageText: moderated_classes lists the classes that were moderated.checked and unchecked: what was looked for and what could not be; a partial result is free.

The same check, async

    "input": "You are such an idiot, just shut up.",
    "mode": "detect",
    "async": true,
    "metadata": { "commentId": "c_981" }
  }'

In Detectivision’s flags, a rude word aimed at someone is an insult; profanity is for swear words. Sent async, the same check costs half: the API answers 202 with the request’s id, and the result comes by webhook with your metadata.

Moving over

Moving from Hive in five steps

  1. List the classes your rules use

    Write down which Hive classes and thresholds decide an action in your code, such as a 0.9 score on a visual class or a level 3 on a text class.

  2. Use the table above, then ask GET /api/v1/flags for the flags your account has. A flag keeps its key.

  3. Send the same content to both

    Run a sample of your own messages and images through Hive and Detectivision, as separate calls, and compare the answers.

  4. Start by acting on flagged and the flags raised, then tune: for example, send results with a confidence between 0.5 and 0.7 to human review.

  5. For content that can wait, send "async": true, verify each webhook’s signature and process each webhook-id once.

Questions

Frequently asked

How much does Hive AI moderation cost?

Hive’s pricing page, read on 17 October 2026, lists $3.00 per 1,000 requests for visual moderation, $0.50 per 1,000 requests for text moderation and $0.03 a minute for audio moderation. Video is billed at special rates once Hive enables it for you, and Enterprise pricing is custom. Hive’s docs add that visual and text moderation require an annual contract. Detectivision’s plans are on its pricing page: Basic is $49 a month, Pro $199 and Enterprise $999.

Does Hive have a free tier?

Hive’s pricing page lists “$50+ in Free Credits after adding a payment method” on its Developers plan. Its docs say you can test the Playgrounds instantly, at default rate limits of 100 requests a day for text and visual moderation. Detectivision has a free trial on its Basic plan, with 10,000 text, 10,000 image and 300 video credits.

Can I use Hive’s moderation API without a contract?

Hive’s docs call its self-serve V3 API “For developer testing ONLY: 100 requests/day limit”, and say visual and text moderation require an annual contract. They point smaller customers to Hive’s self-serve vision language model, which the pricing page lists at $0.50 per million input tokens and $2.50 per million output tokens. Higher limits and Enterprise projects go through Hive’s sales team.

Which languages does Hive moderate?

Hive’s text moderation docs list about 30 languages, though not every class is offered in every language. Its speech moderation docs list English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Hindi and German. Detectivision documents its text checks for English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Turkish, Arabic, Russian and Hindi, though a flag may cover only some of them. Its audio moderation understands the same ten.

Does Hive moderate live streams?

Yes. Hive’s FAQ says its moderation models process live RTMP and HLS streams, visual and audio, and its docs say to contact Hive to have streams allocated to your project before use. Detectivision runs live sessions on a stream link (RTSP, RTMP, HLS, HTTP or SRT) or on frames you send from a camera, with live stream credits on the Pro and Enterprise plans.

Can I use Hive and Detectivision together?

Yes. They are separate HTTP calls, so you can send the same content to both, for example to compare results on your own messages and images before you choose. Each Detectivision check uses credits, and Hive charges by its own units.
